Making My Way
You’re Invited! February 9-12 at Over Here Studio in Portland ME is my first exhibit of 2024, titled "Making My Way." This exhibit is a reflection of my journey in the realm of art.
I am Sharon Chandler, and my creations form a distinctive collection with a profound connection to the natural world. Incorporating cloth, wool roving, paint, clay, beads, yarn, and canvas, my art is an amalgamation of carefully collected elements, meticulously assembled to convey a deeper narrative.
In this phase of my life, I approach each project with fearlessness, a stark departure from the inhibitions that once plagued me during my time in art school in the 70s. Over the years, I have cultivated self-acceptance and confidence, triumphing over the traumas of conforming to Eurocentric standards. I adamantly reject any attempt to define me by such standards, choosing instead to celebrate every piece I create. This celebration is a testament to my understanding of who I am and my unique voice as an artist.
Having navigated through a period of creative paralysis induced by past traumas, I am now making up for lost time with an unwavering determination. A significant catalyst for this resurgence was my daughter, Rachel Gloria Adams, who reignited my creative spark. Since then, the flame has not waned; I cannot and will not stop creating. Importantly, this creative expression aligns harmoniously with my mental well-being, forming an integral part of my life.
As I continue my artistic journey, I am dedicated to honing and evolving my craftsmanship. Embracing and celebrating the distinctive flaws in my work, I view obvious mistakes as deliberate elements of design, inviting viewers to ponder and ask questions. Ultimately, I aspire for my children and grandchildren to perceive me as someone who perseveres, constantly moving forward in the pursuit of artistic expression.
